Should I turn on encryption on my computer?

Encryption helps protect files on a lost computer; check that it is enabled.
- On Windows, search Settings for Device encryption or check BitLocker. On Mac, search System Settings for FileVault.
- Follow the device's instructions and save its recovery key securely somewhere other than only on that computer.
- Use a strong login password and lock the screen when leaving the computer unattended.
Get help if
A missing computer was unencrypted or someone knows its login. Encryption does not stop a scammer using an already unlocked session.
