My email got hacked. What do I do?

Reviewed answer

Take it back fast. Your email is the key to every other account, so it comes first.

  1. From a device you trust, change the password and turn on two-step sign-in. If you're locked out, use the provider's official account recovery page.
  2. Check the recovery phone and email, and the forwarding and filter settings. Attackers often add a rule that forwards or hides your mail.
  3. Sign out of all other sessions and remove devices you don't recognize in the account's security page.
  4. Change passwords on any account that used the same password, starting with banking.
  5. Tell your contacts not to act on recent emails from you, especially requests for money or gift cards.
