A check cleared, but the sender wants some money back. Is that safe?
Reviewed answer
Available funds do not prove a check is genuine; fake checks can take weeks to be detected.
- Do not spend the deposit or send any portion to the sender or another person.
- Tell your bank's fraud department about the check and the request to forward money.
- Save the check and messages. In the US, report the scheme at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
