How do I make my home wifi router safe?
Reviewed answer
Change the default passwords, keep it updated, and replace it once the maker stops updating it.
- Change both the wifi password and the router's admin password from what's printed on the sticker if they are simple or shared.
- Turn on automatic updates in the router's app or admin page. If it came from your internet provider, it usually updates itself.
- Use WPA3 or WPA2 security. Turn off WPS and remote management unless you need them.
- Put smart gadgets and guests on a separate guest network if your router offers one.
- If the maker no longer offers updates for your router, replace it or ask your internet provider for a new one.

If the router's settings changed without you, or devices you don't recognize keep appearing, reset it to factory settings and set it up again.
