How do I set up my kid's first phone safely?
Reviewed answer
Use the free built-in controls (Apple Screen Time or Google Family Link) and keep talking.
- Set the phone up as a child account in Apple Family Sharing or Google Family Link. Turn on purchase approval and app approval.
- Set downtime hours and keep the phone charging outside the bedroom at night.
- Start with texting and calling only approved contacts. Add apps one at a time.
- Tell your kid: if anyone online asks for photos or threatens them, they won't be in trouble for telling you. Say it more than once.
