Do I need a VPN?

Reviewed answer

Most people don't. A VPN only moves who can see your traffic. It doesn't stop scams or viruses.

  1. At home on your own wifi, you can skip it. Your web traffic is already encrypted by the sites themselves.
  2. If you use one, it should be because you don't trust a network (travel, hotels) or your work requires it.
  3. Avoid free VPN apps. Some make money by collecting and selling what you do online.
  4. iCloud+ subscribers can turn on Private Relay, which hides your browsing in Safari from the network you're on.

If a pop-up or ad says your phone is exposed and you must install a VPN now, that is a sales trick or a scam. Close it.
