Is it safe to keep using an old phone or computer that doesn't get updates?

Reviewed answer

For banking and email, no. Once updates stop, known holes stay open. Fine for offline jobs.

  1. Check Settings for an update. If none comes and the device is several years old, search the maker's website to see if your model still gets security updates.
  2. Windows 10 home PCs stopped getting security updates in October 2026. Upgrade to Windows 11 if your PC qualifies, or plan a replacement.
  3. Move banking, email, and shopping to a device that still updates.
  4. An old device can still be a music player, kitchen timer, or photo frame. Keep it off accounts that matter.

If an old device is the only way someone in your family gets online, help them replace it. Older relatives are the ones most often hit.
