What is a passkey and should I use one?
Reviewed answer
Yes. A passkey signs you in with your face, fingerprint, or PIN and can't be phished.
- When a site or app offers to create a passkey, say yes. It is saved in your phone's built-in password manager (Apple, Google, or Microsoft).
- Start with your most important accounts: email, bank, and your Apple, Google, or Microsoft account.
- Make sure you can recover your Apple, Google, or Microsoft account if you lose your phone: a current recovery phone number or email, or a recovery key kept somewhere safe.
- Keep your old password for now, stored in the password manager. Some sites still fall back to it.

If a site you never set up asks you to approve a passkey or sign-in, or a text or email walks you through creating one, stop and go to the site yourself.
