Are QR codes safe to scan?
Reviewed answer
Scanning is harmless. The risk is the fake website it opens, so read the address before you tap.
- Look at the web address your camera shows before opening it. If it isn't the business you expect, don't tap.
- On parking meters, chargers, and signs, check for a sticker pasted over the original code. Use the city's or company's official app instead.
- Be suspicious of QR codes in emails or letters that say you must sign in or pay. Go to the site yourself.
- Never enter a password or card number on a page you reached from a stranger's QR code.
