I let a stranger remotely control my computer. What should I do?
Reviewed answer
Disconnect the computer and secure important accounts from a different trusted device.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet to end the connection.
- From another trusted device, contact your bank if financial accounts were exposed and change important passwords.
- End unfamiliar account sessions and review recovery details, purchases, and transfers.
- Use the computer maker's support to remove remote tools and assess whether a reinstall is needed. A clean scan alone is not proof of safety.
