Is this call from my bank, the IRS, or the police real?
Reviewed answer
Hang up and call back on a number you look up yourself. Caller ID can be faked.
- Hang up. Call the number on the back of your card, on a statement, or on the agency's official website.
- Remember the rules: no bank, agency, or police department asks for gift cards, crypto, wires, or cash pickups, or tells you to move money to a "safe account".
- Never read out a code that was texted to you. That code is how they get into your account.
- In the US, the IRS normally contacts you by mail first. Report scam calls at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
- Your phone has built-in options to silence or screen unknown callers. Look in the Phone app's settings.
