How can I tell whether an IRS letter is genuine?
Reviewed answer
Paper letters can be forged too; verify the notice through IRS.gov.
- In the US, type IRS.gov yourself and search the notice or letter number.
- Check your IRS online account where available. Contact the IRS using contact information obtained independently if the letter is unclear.
- Keep the letter and envelope, and respond to a verified notice by its deadline. Avoid links, codes, or numbers in an unverified letter.
