Malicious file converters

A free document converter or download tool steals uploaded information or delivers malicious software.

What it looks like

Fictional example: Convert your document free at example.com/convert. Upload the file to begin.
Fictional example: Your converted file needs our desktop helper. Install it and allow all requested permissions.

How it works

A site offers to convert documents, merge files, or download media. It may perform the advertised task while collecting sensitive information from uploaded files or delivering malware. A successful conversion does not establish that the service is safe.

Warning signs

  • A simple conversion unexpectedly requires an installer or browser extension.
  • The tool asks you to disable security protections.
  • A document download arrives as a program.
  • The site requests access unrelated to the conversion.
If you got one of these
  1. Use built-in export, print-to-PDF, or document conversion features where possible.
  2. Do not upload identity documents or financial records to an unverified service.
  3. Do not run unexpected installers or enable document macros.
  4. If you ran a suspicious download, disconnect the device and use a clean device to secure accounts.
If you already paid or shared something
  1. Ask your card issuer to review charges and replace exposed payment details.
  2. Run an updated security scan; change exposed passwords and end active sessions from a clean device.
  3. Report at ic3.gov and use identitytheft.gov if uploaded documents exposed identity information.

Who gets targeted

Anyone converting documents or downloading media, including students, job seekers, and people handling paperwork.
