How it works
A person poses as an immigration lawyer or authorized representative, sometimes borrowing a real professional's identity. They charge for work they cannot properly perform or fabricate filing and approval notices. Missed deadlines or false applications can affect the underlying case.
Warning signs
- Approval or special access to officials is guaranteed.
- Professional credentials cannot be independently verified.
- They ask you to sign blank forms or provide false information.
- They withhold original documents or copies of filed paperwork.
If you got one of these
- Verify a U.S. lawyer through the state licensing authority or check an accredited representative's official listing.
- Contact the verified office using independently found details.
- Review every form before signing and keep copies and receipts.
- Keep your original identity documents and check case information through official channels.
If you already paid or shared something
- Ask your bank or payment provider about stopping or recovering the payment.
- Get verified legal help promptly to review filings and deadlines.
- Save all documents and report the service to your state consumer protection office or reportfraud.ftc.gov.
