Timeshare exit and resale scams
A supposed buyer or exit specialist promises to end your timeshare obligations, then collects repeated fees.
What it looks like
Fictional example: We have a buyer for your timeshare. Pay the transfer tax today and we will release the sale proceeds.
Fictional example: Cancel your timeshare permanently for one upfront fee. Sign at example.com/timeshare-exit.
How it works
Someone offers to sell, rent out, or cancel your timeshare and asks for advance fees. They may know real ownership details and provide convincing contracts or bank documents. The deal never completes, and further charges or supposed recovery offers follow.
Warning signs
- An unsolicited buyer offers an unusually generous price.
- Fees or taxes must be paid before proceeds can be released.
- They guarantee an exit without reviewing your contract.
- Payments go to unrelated people or overseas accounts.
If you got one of these
- Contact your timeshare operator directly about legitimate exit or resale options.
- Verify the broker or lawyer through independent licensing records.
- Have an independent qualified adviser review any proposed contract.
- Confirm your obligations before changing existing payments.
If you already paid or shared something
- Ask your bank immediately about recalling transfers or disputing charges.
- Confirm with the timeshare operator whether ownership or obligations actually changed.
- Save contracts and payment records, report at ic3.gov, and decline further release or recovery fees.
Who gets targeted
