What it looks like
Hi, is this David? It's Lisa from the golf club. Are we still on for Saturday?
Sorry, I think I got the wrong number. You seem nice though. Where are you from?
Hey, are you free for dinner next week? My assistant gave me this number.
How it works
The text looks like an honest mistake. If you reply, they apologize, chat and become friendly over days or weeks, often sending photos of a glamorous life. Then they mention crypto or a trading platform, or ask for money, which leads to a romance or investment scam.
Warning signs
- A wrong number text from someone attractive and successful
- They keep chatting after learning it was a mistake
- They move the chat to WhatsApp or Telegram
- They bring up investing, crypto or making money
- Their life seems glamorous but they never call by video
If you got one of these
- Do not reply. Delete and block the number.
- Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) to report it to your carrier.
- If you already replied, stop. Do not share personal details.
- Never invest through someone you only know from texting.
If you already paid or shared something
- Stop sending money and report it at ic3.gov and reportfraud.ftc.gov.
- Call your bank and any crypto exchange you used.
- Ignore offers to recover your money for a fee.
Who gets targeted
Anyone with a phone. Polite people who reply to correct the sender are the ones they hope to reach.
